ANINI BEACH & KALIHIWAI
Anini is a rural beach community home to the Hawaiian Island’s longest stretch of protective reef (about 2 miles long). Known for its palatial beachfront properties, protected swimming, fabulous windsurfing, snorkeling and beach combing.
Protected Swimming Areas
Anini Beach is one of the safest places on the north shore to swim and snorkel year-round, as protection from the ocean swells comes from a long, fringing barrier reef that extends the length of this exclusive area. You will find Anini between the areas of Kilauea and Princeville on Kauai’s North Shore on a narrow but stunningly scenic road that winds down to oceans’ edge. The ocean fronting Anini Beach is typically calm and shallow providing for great snorkeling, swimming and kayaking. Anini Beach has been a favorite area for years for those learning to windsurf due to the prevailing winds and the protected lagoon.
A Beautiful Place in the Sun
The beach is narrow but extends far enough that you are sure to be able to find your own private place to enjoy the sun and ocean. There are beautiful, mature Kamani trees providing welcomed shade to portions of the beach as well as camping, restroom and shower facilities at the main beach park area and a boat ramp.
During high surf, particularly in the winter, the current running parallel to the beach can become strong enough to pull an unwary swimmer out through the channel in the reef at the west end of the park. So please stay inside the reef.

Continue along Anini Beach Road through a quiet residential area all the way to its western end where a sandbar extending far out invites wading and fishing. Children enjoy the quiet water and the tiny shells along the waterline, and you’ll love the amazing combination of sounds – the roar of the surf breaking on the reef far offshore, and near your feet, the gentle rippling of the sea upon the sand.
In the summer months, you can watch the sun set into the ocean at Anini Beach, a glorious sight. The water shimmers gold as the sun’s dying fire fades slowly to a pearl and smoky gray, to the songs of crickets and the lapping of the gentle waves.
